GOLD HILL — A motorcycle crash claimed the life of a 69-year-old Gold Hill man on Old Sam's Valley Road Saturday, police said.

Carl Adamo was driving his 1986 Yamaha V11 motorcycle east in the 4300 block of Old Sam's Valley Road at 1:51 p.m. when he collided with a pickup truck turning into a driveway, according to Jackson County sheriff's officials.

The motorcycle caught fire immediately after the crash. Witnesses at the scene pulled Adamo away from the burning motorcycle and then extinguished the fire, officials said.

Emergency crews from Jackson County Fire District No. 3 arrived on the scene to attempt to revive Adamo, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Adamo was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. Sheriff's investigators are looking into the accident with the assistance of Medford police crash reconstruction teams.

The pickup driver, Richard Keith Joines, 77, was not injured.

Sheriff's deputies determined Joines was making a left-hand turn into a driveway and did not see the oncoming motorcycle.

Sheriff's officials were assisted at the scene by Mercy Flights Ambulance crews, Shady Cove police and workers with Perl Funeral Home.
