COTTAGE GROVE — Josh Metcalf returned a fumble for a touchdown with about four minutes to play as the Rogue Warriors survived for a 9-6 victory over the Eugene Outlaws at Cottage Grove High School.

Metcalf stripped and recovered the ball from the Outlaws' quarterback and returned it about 30 yards to pay dirt.

The Warriors (5-1) clung to a 2-0 lead at halftime after a snap over the head of the Outlaws' punter went into the end zone. Free safety Bruce Franklin made the tackle to put the Warriors up in the first quarter.

On Eugene's final possession, defensive back Renie Redfeldt jarred the ball loose from one of the Outlaws' wide receivers and the Warriors recovered to seal the three-point victory.

Franklin also had an interception in the game and Josh Kerney rushed for about 70 yards on 14 carries as both teams struggled to score in the defensive tussle.
