Joseph E. Strigle, Jr.



Joseph E. Strigle, Jr. passed away peacefully at his home in Central Point, on April 18, 2009 after a long battle with cancer, at the age of 87. His wife of 62 years and daughter were by his side.

Joseph was born Aug. 21, 1921, in Lancaster, Ohio, to Joseph and Georgia Strigle. His family moved to California in 1924. Joseph graduated from San Bernardino High School in 1940, where he starred in football and track. In 1942, while attending San Bernardino Valley College, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corp and became a gunner for the 312th Bomb Group during WWII. Joseph was honorably discharged in 1945 with a purple heart for injuries received in a bail out from his downed aircraft in New Guinea. He is a member of the American Legion Post 0015. After the war, Joseph became Athletic Director and coached football at St. Bernardine and Newman High School in San Bernardino, Calif., before moving on to work for General Tire, Sante Fe Oil Co., and James White Oil Co. Joseph retired in 1979.

On Nov. 17, 1946, Joseph married his long time sweetheart, Opal V. Thompson in Las Vegas, Nevada. They were married for 62 years. Joseph and Opal relocated from San Bernardino, Calif. to Central Point, Ore. in 1982.

Joseph was preceded in death by his mother Georgia; father, J. Edward; two brothers, Carl and Walter; a sister, Mary-Margaret; and two great-grandchildren, Brooke Selisch and Cody Kennedy.

Joseph is survived by his wife, Opal; sons, Joe Strigle (Nancy), of Burbank, Calif., and Bob Strigle (fianc, Susan), of Medford, Ore.; and daughter, Pattie Thompson (Ken), of Central Point, Ore. Joseph also leaves behind seven grandchildren, Marc (Jenny) Strigle, of Santa Clarita and Marci Strigle, of Los Angeles, Calif., Rick (Marcy) Kennedy and Tim (Tasha) Kennedy, of Medford, Ore., Joshua Strigle and Shayne (Estella) Strigle of Central Point, Ore., Shaun (Jenny) Thompson, of Central Point, Ore.; and seven great-grandchildren, Rebekah Kennedy, Justin and Mason Haeckler, of Medford, Ore., Brice and Isaac Thompson, of Central Point, Ore. and Brian and Jason Dyer, of Los Angeles, Calif.

No public service is planned. Internment will be at Eagle Point National Cemetery with military honors.
