Joseph (Joe) Melvin Martin, 85, of Medford, Ore., was called home to be with his Lord on Monday, May 11, 2009, at Hearthstone Nursing Facility. Joe was born April 2, 1924, at Centerville, Calif. to Joseph and Mercedes "Maria" Xavier Martin. He helped with the family dairy farm in the San Joaquin Valley and serviced in the U.S. Army during WWII. He later moved to the Rogue Valley in the late 1940s. He owned and operated Martin's Auto Grooming for several years. His detailing business served many clients including auto dealerships (Courtesy Chevrolet), actress Ginger Rogers, and other celebrities and personalities from as far away as the Portland and San Francisco areas.
Joe had a deep passion for classic and old cars and was a member of Contemporary Autos of Southern Oregon (CASO) car club. He rarely missed a meeting or car cruise and became known as the "Trophy Man" to all trophy sponsors for CASO's annual Friendship Meet car show.
He always had a joke to tell and was often seen driving one of his classic cars in local parades. He was a longtime member of the Eagles Lodge in Medford.
Joe is survived by two sons, Pastor J. Mark Martin (Leslie), of Peoria, Ariz. and Randall V. Martin (Traci), of Roseburg; two brothers, Clarence (Belle), of Fresno, Calif. and Manuel (Elsie), of Dos Palos, Calif.; two sisters, Mary Cotta, of Los Banos, Calif. and Virgie Avila, of Modesto, Calif.; and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Emily Avila and a granddaughter.

A military honor ceremony and inurnment will take place at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 10, 2009 at Eagle Point National Cemetery. A celebration of his life will follow at a location to be announced. Rogue Valley Funeral Alternatives is in charge of arrangements.
