It's Memorial Day, and events to celebrate the holiday are planned this morning around the area.

Schools, post offices, libraries and some businesses also are closed for the day.

Memorial Day events include:

Tributes to veterans are set at 9 a.m. at the Fallen War Heroes Memorial at Don Jones Memorial Park, 223 W. Vilas Road, Central Point; at 10:45 a.m. at the IOOF Eastwood Cemetery in Medford, where a Blue Star memorial plaque will be dedicated; at 10:30 a.m. at Mountain View Cemetery in Ashland; and at 11 a.m. at the Eagle Point National Cemetery, 2763 Riley Road, Eagle Point. The final day of the Boatnik festival takes place all day at Riverside Park on the Rogue River in Grants Pass. The event, a fundraiser for kids' activities, features hydroplane races at 1 p.m. plus a men's fastpitch tournament from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., carnival rides from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., a Memorial Day observation at noon and an ice cream giveaway for kids at 1:30 p.m. A Picnic in the Park is set from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Harnish Wayside Park off Highway 62 in Eagle Point, featuring music, a barbecue, ice cream, arts exhibits, crafts, wine tasting and activities for kids. Admission is $5, and proceeds benefit children's activities.
