Betty Brugman, 83, of Medford died Thursday, May 28, 2009 in the presence of her husband and two of her sons. A memorial service is planned for later in the summer.
Born in Milaca, Minn., on June 17, 1925 she was the third daughter of Oscar and Verne Johnson. She was raised in Minnesota, but when her father decided to start farming in Warren, Ore., Betty and her family relocated to the Portland area in 1941. She graduated from Scapoose High School in 1941 and then attended Oregon State University where she graduated with a degree in Chemistry and met her future husband, Francis Brugman. On March 29, 1948, she and Frank were married in Portland, Ore.
After the birth of their three sons, Betty stayed home as a parent and homemaker, while also maintaining her musical interests as a clarinet and trombone player. She was active in charity work, particularly the Children's Home Society. Upon retirement, Betty and Frank relocated from Ventura, Calif., to The Rogue Valley where they have resided for 24 years. Betty became active in local music, playing in the Ashland City Band, the Southern Oregon Concert Band, the Rogue Valley Symphonic Band and the Southern Oregon University Band. Betty was also an avid sports fan.
She and Frank loved learning about the world through travel. They traveled to Southeast Asia, Europe (including Britain, Italy, Ireland, Greece, and Portugal) and China.
She is survived by her husband, Frank; three sons, John, Jim and Gary; and five grandchildren, Karen, Diana, Sarah, Katie and John.
