Rogue Valley Transportation District will get two federal stimulus grants totaling $2.7 million to buy buses, vans and other equipment, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation.

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 will provide a $2.4 million grant for three new buses, five new vans, bicycle racks, bus shelters and security and shop equipment. The grant will also pay for renovation of the administration and operations base in Medford.

A second $316,000 grant will pay to repave the parking area at the base.

More than $1.44 billion has been made available to 28 states since President Obama signed the bill into law on Feb. 17. In total, the act's money will provide $8.4 billion for transit improvements.
