June and D.C. Charlie Mapel of Medford celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary on May 26, with family and friends at Fountain Plaza.

June and D.C. Charlie Mapel of Medford celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary on May 26, with family and friends at Fountain Plaza.

June and Charlie were married in Grants Pass after meeting at Gold Hill High School and working together at Pacific Portland Cement.

For nearly 60 years Charlie worked building and consulting on roads and dams. He participated in the construction of eight dams in the area. He became an owner/operator of a heavy equipment operating company, was a business agent for International Operating Engineer's Union and worked in the sales and consulting arena as well. He was also president of the Oregon State Building & Construction Council, where he organized building trades statewide.

June was a secretary at Mann's department store and has been active as an artist since 1965. She was a member of the Southern Oregon Society of Artists and sold many of her paintings while displaying her work at US Bank in Medford.

The Mapels have one son, Steve, who lives in Gig Harbor, Wash.

Their two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren live in the Rogue Valley.
