A 6-year-old California boy drowned Sunday while playing in the Chetco River at a Southern Oregon state park.

Angel Tovar-Ramirez was playing in the river off a gravel bar adjacent to Loeb State Park 10 miles northeast of Brookings when he was swept away in the water, Curry County Sheriff John Bishop said in a news release today.

The boy was face down in the water and unresponsive when he was found, Bishop said. Bystanders performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation on the boy until the arrival of medical personnel, who also tried to revive him. He was transported by ambulance to Sutter Coast Hospital in Crescent City, Calif., and later died.

The boy had been attending a church function at the park with his parents, Amelia Tovar-Ramirez and Jose Tovar-Ramirez.

An investigation into the incident is continuing.
