After Taylor Schmidt pitched her North Medford softball team to the Class 6A state title on the same day she would go through graduation ceremonies with the rest of her senior class, she commented how nothing could be better.

Well, that reaction was given a bit of an addendum on Wednesday, when Schmidt was named player of the year in statewide voting by the 6A coaches.

"It's really exciting because there's a lot of really good players in our state," Schmidt said of the good news. "It's something that I really didn't expect and it's just kind of a privilege to have earned an award like that."

Schmidt was one of three Black Tornado players on the all-state first team, with five North players honored overall.

Also receiving first-team nods were sophomore catcher Amanda Wolfe and junior center fielder McKenna Storey. Junior shortstop Jenna Stevens was a second-team selection, while sophomore left fielder Amanda Freitas was named to the third team.

"I'm really happy for them and really happy that our team got a lot of recognition," said Schmidt, 18. "I know that all of them worked really hard and this year was really a team effort. Every person worked hard and not one person could've done it alone."

Grants Pass placed four players on the all-state team in center fielder Tara Glover (first team), pitcher Morgan Barnes (second team), third baseman Karleigh Prestianni (second team) and shortstop Krystin Jantzer (second team).

North Medford wound up with two of the top three honors — McMinnville's Anna Bertrand was chosen pitcher of the year — when Mike Mayben was named 6A coach of the year. In his fourth season at the helm, Mayben led the Black Tornado to its first state title since 2002 and fifth overall.

"It's always a fun day with him," Schmidt said of Mayben, who led the team to a 26-5 record. "He's always really positive and never yells at anyone. You can tell he likes to be coaching our team and has fun doing it. It makes it easier when our coach loves to be out there, too."

Also making it easier was being able to build a team around such a multi-faceted player like the Oregon Tech-bound Schmidt.

As one of only two seniors on the North roster, the 5-foot-9, 145-pound standout established single-season school records for wins and games pitched by posting a 25-5 record. Her eight home runs also eclipsed the previous school record, and she wound up hitting .462 with a team-best 35 RBIs and .817 slugging percentage.

She finished with a 1.59 ERA, striking out 165 with 47 walks in 189 innings pitched.

Because of her ability to make an impact in both areas of the game, Schmidt said she was proud of being named player of the year instead of potentially vying for pitcher of the year.

"Either one would've been really awesome," she said, "but I think being player of the year shows I can also hit the ball and do others things to help my team rather than just pitch. I like that they see me as a complete player."

Wolfe's impact was equally vital for Schmidt since the sophomore called the pitches for North Medford. The catcher also hit .344 with 31 RBIs and 10 doubles. Storey hit .477 and scored 31 runs with 17 RBIs and was near-flawless in roaming center field with a .974 fielding percentage.

Stevens equaled a single-season school record with 11 doubles this past season and hit .391 with a team-high 35 runs to go with a .942 fielding percentage. Freitas led the team with a .487 batting average and scored 21 runs with a team-high 16 stolen bases as the No. 9 hitter.

The Portland State-bound Bertrand went 22-4 with an 0.61 ERA for McMinnville, striking out 280 in 183 innings. Her Grizzlies lost to Schmidt and North Medford 3-2 in the 6A semifinals.
