A 21-year-old woman walking home on Ashland's Siskiyou Boulevard was sexually assaulted by an unidentified man late Sunday, police said.

The woman was walking from the Minute Market at 1690 Siskiyou Blvd. to her south Ashland home when the man struck up a conversation with her at around 10 p.m., police said. Near Clay Street, the man sexually assaulted her, said Deputy Chief Rich Walsh.

The woman did not know the man. Police describe him as a heavily built white or Latino man of medium height in his 20s. He was wearing a tank top and light-colored pants.

"The description is all we have at this point," Walsh said this morning. "We wanted to get the information out so that the community can be aware."

The woman went home before reporting the assault at about 11 p.m., Walsh said.

Sexual assaults where the victim does not know the perpetrator are fairly rare in Ashland, he said.

A detective has been assigned to the case and is investigating, police said.

Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Steve Brown at 482-5211.
