Dom S. Provost

On May 10, 1928, Dom S. Provost was born into the fourth generation of Provosts living in Ashland. His love of Ashland and roots ran deep as did his love of family, friends, and golf. Dom peacefully passed on July 16, 2009 at the age of 81 from a heart attack while completing what became his final round of dialysis.

While attending AHS Dom was a successful scholar. He played basketball, baseball, and held an undefeated high school tennis career. Upon graduation in 1946 he attended Stanford University for one term. He then transferred and later graduated from the University of Oregon as a four year letter winner in golf with a bachelors degree in business.

After graduation Dom pursued various career opportunities throughout the Pacific Northwest before resettling in Ashland. Here he successfully took over and ran the 100 plus year family furniture and floor covering business. At this time he also married the love of his life and best friend Joyce M. Bearden. In their 51 years together they raised four wonderful children and unconditionally contributed to the Ashland Community, Jackson County, and State of Oregon.

Dom owned and operated Provost Furniture for over 30 years while successfully serving the Rogue Valley. Many of you will remember him for "I've just gotta get rid of this stuff." Dom was generous, humble, and a true gentleman. He would remember your name after just one meeting and was a friend to everyone. He will be missed.

Throughout his lifetime Dom spearheaded various community projects and was a member of numerous organizations. He was past president of the Ashland Rotary Club, past Chairman of the Ashland School Board, a member of Ashland's Economic Development Committee, a member of the Elks, elected as one of the Outstanding Community Leaders, 60 year member of the Rogue Valley Country Club, past champion of the Southern Oregon Golf Tournament, a Scratch League Bowler, and Red Coat for the Shakespeare Festival to name a few.

As a community contributor Dom had an extra soft spot in his heart for our youth and the game of golf. His life-long love of golf began at age six on the Oak Knoll Golf Course and never faded. Throughout his 71 years of playing golf, 15 of them were spent as a scratch golfer. He golfed his age numerous times and at the age of 77 held a 10/11 handicap. Dom always enjoyed a good post-golf game of cards. He truly cherished the fellowship Ashland and the game of golf gifted him.

Dom was preceded in death by his elder brother, Bud (1944); father, Dom (1966); and beloved mother, Mern (1992). He adored his family and was dearly loved by his surviving wife, Joyce; son, John D. Skyrman, of Kent, Wash., son, Dr. Kent B. Provost, of Chicago, Ill. (granddaughter Alexi J. Provost); daughter, Alicia J. Provost, of Oregon City, Ore.; son, Dom Gregory and Deborah Provost (grandson Dom Mace Provost) of Talent, Ore., and a wonderful little girl named Hallie.
