CANBY — The South Medford Broncos and North Medford Black Stallions each opened with victories Thursday in the first round of the 16-team Oregon Junior Baseball Division II State Tournament at Canby High School.

CANBY — The South Medford Broncos and North Medford Black Stallions each opened with victories Thursday in the first round of the 16-team Oregon Junior Baseball Division II State Tournament at Canby High School.

Teams at this level consist of primarily outgoing eighth- and ninth-graders, although they are allowed to have as many as four outgoing 10th-graders.

South Medford used a two-run triple by Dillon Kropp to pull ahead of Sheldon 6-5 and then padded its lead for an eventual 10-5 triumph.

Jack Walker and Taren Bradd also had run-scoring hits for the Broncos (23-9), while Austin Reames picked up the win on the mound by striking out five and allowing six hits in five innings. Kropp pitched the final two innings.

North Medford needed only five innings to tame West Salem in a 13-3 victory, with Jesse Ledbetter earning the complete-game victory on the mound.

Charlie Walker was 3-for-4 with a double and three RBIs for the Black Stallions, while Alec Williamson was 2-for-2 with a double and three runs.

Both local teams advance to the winner's bracket, where South Medford will face Oregon City at 2 p.m. today in the second round and North Medford will follow against Sunset at 4:30.

Little League

BOYS 10-11 STATE TOURNAMENT — At Portland, Central Point routed Corvallis, 16-5, Wednesday to advance to bracket play with a 3-1 record in its pool at Lakeside Little League Fields. Central Point opens single-elimination play at 6 tonight against Hood River.

Central Point's Ben Curry slugged two home runs and drove in six runs. He also was the winning pitcher, striking out seven in four innings.

Dylan Pearce added two doubles and five RBIs, and Matt DeVries rapped a two-run double.
