Walkers near the Barnett Road bridge over Bear Creek in Medford have one less option for getting through the area starting today.

The state Department of Transportation will close the pedestrian bridge that links Alba Drive along the west bank of Bear Creek to Medford's dog park and the Bear Creek Greenway trail on the east side of the water.

The bridge will be closed for as long as three months during construction of a retaining wall that's part of the reconstruction of Alba Drive, ODOT officials have said.

Gary Leaming, a spokesman for the Oregon Department of Transportation, said that the retaining wall is part of a project to rebuild a new sidewalk to the pedestrian bridge. Safety concerns required the bridge to be closed, Leaming said.

The new sidewalk is part of a larger project that will rebuild the bridge that carries Barnett Road over Bear Creek. The new bridge is part of the larger south freeway interchange rebuild.
