Stay under cover today if you can: It's forecast to be the hottest day of an extremely hot week in the Rogue Valley.

The National Weather Service was predicting a high of 106 today in the Medford area, with lows in the high 60s. The high will drop all the way down to 102 or so Wednesday before settling in the high 90s or low 100s for the remainder of the week, weather service forecasters predict.

A high of 106 today would break the record for the day, set when the mercury reached 105 in 2003.

"Some cooling is expected in the latter part of the week," forecasters said in a special weather statement about the heat, "but temperatures will continue to be above normal."
