Smoke hanging over the Rogue Valley today drifted in overnight from the Burnt Peak Fire, which broke out Wednesday afternoon near Joseph Stewart State Park on Highway 62 east of Medford.

Firefighters from the Oregon Department of Forestry estimated the fire had grown to about 160 acres by early this morning.

Firefighters worked through the night to build containment lines around the fire, but no estimate of containment time will be made until firefighters finish their work today.

About 100 people will be on the fire today, improving containment lines in the steep, rugged area where the fire broke out, and about 50 will be assigned to the night shift, ODF officials said.
