A wildland fire broke out this afternoon around the 13000 block of Upper Applegate Road, and the Oregon Department of Forestry has ordered ground crews, a helicopter and retardant to try to contain it.

The fire was burning in heavy fuels near south of McKee Bridge in the area near Beaver Creek. It grew quickly to several acres. Extreme heat and low humidity will make the firefighters' work more challenging. The temperature was 96 degrees at the Medford airport around 1 p.m.

Firefighters also were continuing to work on the Burnt Peak fire near Stewart State Park. It broke out late Wednesday and had burned about 160 acres.
