The Rogue Initiative for a Vital Economy, also known as THRIVE, has received a $53,620 grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to help launch a program to support new farmers.

The federal economic stimulus money will give a boost to plans for a small farm incubator program, said THRIVE Executive Director Wendy Siporen.

The proposed incubator program will provide subsidized land and shared tools, as well as other resources, to new farmers, she said. If complete funding can be obtained, it could start in January.

Siporen estimates that it will need at least $360,000 to launch.
