Harris Beach, a popular spot near Brookings for Rogue Valley residents who head to the coast, has the highest rate of bacterial pollution among any Oregon beach listed in a new report.

The annual report on beach pollution by the Natural Resources Defense Council found that Oregon beaches are cleaner than most.

The report focused on state testing for bacterial pollution at ocean, bay and Great Lakes beaches.

In Oregon, 5 percent of samples tested in 2008 came back with levels of fecal bacteria higher than national standards. That was 13th lowest of the 30 states in the report.

The state last year issued 26 health advisories for times when the bacteria level exceeded standards. A fifth of the samples taken at Harris Beach State Park near Brookings exceeded the standard, the highest rate in Oregon.
