Medford police will conduct a pedestrian enforcement operation from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. today at the intersection of Poplar Drive and Progress Drive.

Police will be watching to see if motorists yield the right of way to pedestrians in marked or unmarked crosswalks, and violators will be cited. The fine is $242.

Oregon law requires a driver to stop and remain stopped if a pedestrian is walking in the driver's lane of traffic or the adjacent lane. Oregon law also prohibits passing a stopped vehicle at a marked or unmarked crosswalk at an intersection if the vehicle is stopped to permit a pedestrian to cross the roadway.

Police note that every intersection is considered to have a crosswalk, whether it is marked or unmarked.
