Campbell Spidell



Ruth Marie Campbell Spidell went to be with the Lord on Aug. 17, 2009 at the age of 88 years. She was born to Donald and Gladys Campbell, in Omaha, Neb., on Feb. 23, 1921. The family lived in Wahoo, Neb., Little Rock, Ark. and settled in Birmingham, Ala. She attended the American Academy of Art in Chicago, Ill., where she met her late husband, Haydon James Spidell, a medical student, on a blind date. They married on Sept. 12, 1942, and thus began 63 years of love, commitment and devotion.

They lived 37 years in Richmond, Calif., 15 years in Sutter Creek, Calif., and moved to Rogue Valley Manor, in Medford, Ore., in 1999.

Ruth is survived by her daughter, Anne Smith and husband, Ron of Anacortes, Wash.; grandsons, Matthew, of Kirkland, Wash and Andrew, of Carnation, Wash. and his wife, Elizabeth; great-granddaughters, Madison and McKenna; son, Haydon Spidell, Jr. and wife, Barbara, of Santa Fe, N.M.; and grandchildren, Jonathan and Mary Clare, of San Jose, Calif.; daughter, Mary Reed and her husband, Jerry, of Sutter Creek, Calif.; granddaughters, Sarah, of Sacramento, Calif. and Jennifer, of Rescue, Calif.; and sisters, Alice G. Carrell and husband, Ed, of Gadsden, Ala. and Barbara Montgomery and husband, Gwin, of Baton Rouge, La.

Ruth was an accomplished artist, active in Bible Study Fellowship, and immersed herself in God's word and loved the study and teaching of the Bible. Ruth was best known for touching people's lives with her genuine love, kindness and concern.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Rogue Valley Manor Health Center Fund and Wheaton College Spidell Scholarship Fund. A private family service will be held at Ivy Lawn Memorial Park in Ventura, Calif. in October.
