MEDFORD — A 21-year-old Medford woman was injured early Thursday after falling asleep at the wheel and crashing her car into a utility pole on East McAndrews Road.

Just after 7 a.m., Barbary Goguey, of the 4100 block of Tamarack Drive, was driving her 2003 Mitsubishi Eclipse convertible east on McAndrews Road when she drifted off to sleep and veered off the road and into a utility pole.

Goguey was taken by Mercy Flights ambulance to Rogue Valley Medical Center where she was treated for injuries to her face, leg, arm and hand.

Pacific Power crews repaired the pole and restored power to homes in the area soon after the crash.

Goguey was cited by Medford police for careless driving.

"It's important if you get sleepy to pull off the road and take a nap," Medford police Lt. Tim Doney said. "It's nearly as dangerous to be sleepy behind the wheel as it is to be intoxicated."
