Doris Gaines Beasley

October 23, 1932 - August 25, 2009

Doris was the child of Ed and Billie Gaines. She was born October 23, 1932 in Grants Pass, Oregon and passed away peacefully at her home on Tuesday, August 25, 2009.

Doris lived most of her life in Medford, Oregon, where she was a pioneer in bringing Early Childhood Education to the Rogue Valley. She was the Executive Director of the first Head Start program in Jackson County and lived her life believing the education of pre-school children was instrumental in every child's success. She attended Pacific University, San Jose State College and Southern Oregon University.

Her sense of adventure and unwillingness to put limits on what women can do made her a champion for all. She was a woman ahead of her time.

Doris retired after many years of service from Providence Medical Center in 1999. Her sense of humor, compassion and generosity will be missed by all who knew her.

Doris will be missed by her 5 children, Mark McCoy, of Whitefish, Mont., Deborah (McCoy) McQuade, of Seattle, Wash., Mary Anne McCoy, of Sarasota, Fla., Shirley (Widener) White, of Medford, Ore. and Angela (Beasley) Greene, of Ashland, Ore.. She is also survived by her brothers, Bob and Jim Gaines; and her sister-in-law, Delores Gaines.

She loved and was deeply loved by her children, 13 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Doris was preceded in death by her twin baby girls, Marian Kay and Mirium Sue McCoy; her sister, Dorothy (Gaines) Dutkiewicz; brothers, William and Ernest Gaines; her granddaughter, Danyelle Paul and her beloved cat, Max.

Doris's family would like to thank Tabitha and Francisco Garcia and Joyce Witt for the love and companionship they gave our mother in the final years of her life. There will be a private family viewing at Perl Funeral Home Monday, Aug. 31, 2009 and a public graveside service at Siskiyou Memorial Park at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, September 1, 2009.
