WHITE CITY — Brian Hough, of Junction City, won the Top Alcohol Funny Car (TAFC) race and Doug Hegge, of Vancouver, Wash., claimed the Top Alcohol Dragster (TAD) race Saturday in the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series at Champion Raceway.

Hough regained the division points lead, and it was Hegge's first win of the year.

The racing marked the last of seven events on the Northwest Division calendar.

Hough, the division's reigning TAFC champion, started out in the No. 1 qualifying spot and made his best run of the day in the final against Dennis Taylor, of Anaheim Hills, Calif. In the final, Hough ran 5.759 seconds at 248.39 mph to Taylor's 7.845-second, 117.33-mph pass. It was his second win of the year.

Hegge was the TAD No. 5 qualifier. He had suffered four consecutive first-round losses but knocked out No. 1 qualifier Justin Davis, Murrieta, Calif., in the final. Hegge put down a 5.659-second, 252.90-mph pass, which was more than enough to cover Davis's 6.503-second, 147.37-mph effort.

In Comp Eliminator, Brandon Huhtala, Puyallup, Wash., jettisoned Rob Harrison, North Vancouver, B.C., to grab his first win of the year.

Local racer Lyle Hood of Phoenix won in Super Pro, and Medford's Dave Martin was bested in Pro by Harlan Tucker, Miranda, Calif.

Speedway

LATE MODEL SERIES — At White City, in the last Late Models feature race of the season, Rich Papenhausen won the 40-lap event after leading the entire race at Southern Oregon Speedway.

Jeremy Shank was right on his tail in second place through the beginning of the race and especially as Papenhausen hit heavy traffic on Lap 11. Papenhausen wove through the traffic and built a cushion that carried him through to the end of the race.

Shank finished in second place, Rob Mayea was third and John Duty fourth.

Shank, however, garnered the points title by one over Duty, who led going into the final.

In the C main event, Brett James took the lead on lap four of the 15-lap race and held it through the end. Lisa Stroup's late charge resulted in second place.

John Duty dominated the B main event, followed by Rick Wyatt.

In the Super 4s, Rick Rapp won the feature race. He took the lead from the beginning and held it despite constant pressure from runner-up Brian Johnsen.
