ASHLAND — Southern Oregon head football coach Steve Helminiak announced Tuesday that freshman Alex Miller will start at quarterback for the Raiders this Saturday when they travel to play at Western Oregon.

Miller replaces Paul Sweeney, who had started the first four games of the season.

"We are not giving up on Paul right now," Helminiak said. "We just need a spark. Alex showed an ability to run and showed promise throwing the last week."

The Raiders fell to 1-3 on the season with last week's 37-21 home setback to Linfield. The loss was the third straight for the Raiders after opening the season with a victory over Eastern Oregon. The Mountaineers are ranked 19th in this week's NAIA Top 25 poll after winning their fourth straight this past week.

"Right now we are looking for anything, trying to find something that works," Helminiak said.

Miller played the final two drives of the game for the Raiders last week against the Wildcats and finished 6 of 11 passing for 79 yards and a score. He rushed three times for 26 yards.

Sweeney had four interceptions against Linfield.

Miller, a 5-foot-10, 200-pounder out of Mountain View, Calif., played football at Aragon High School. During his prep career, he was named All-Conference as a senior in football and was twice named the school's Athlete of the Year.
