ASHLAND — Niki Small was a factor on the front line as Ashland needed less than one hour to dispatch Mazama in Southern Sky Conference volleyball on Tuesday.
The Grizzlies opened league play with a 25-7, 25-14, 25-9 home victory.
Small, the senior middle who has received a scholarship to Northern Arizona University, provided 16 kills and two blocks.
“(Small) is a force in the middle,” Ashland coach Jodee Scott said. “She’s hard to handle. It’s difficult for defenders to handle her hits.”
Setter Callie McCoy had 18 assists in two games for the Grizzlies (4-3, 1-0 SSC), while Hannah Stocking and Hayley Ross added seven kills each to the Ashland attack.
Monica Palmesano gave the Grizzlies a lift with 12 aces.
“We passed well and put the ball away efficiently,” said Scott. “The girls never let the energy leave our court. We kept the momentum on our side.”
u MAZAMA 3, CRATER 1 — At Klamath Falls, Taylor Mackey had seven kills, 34 digs and six aces in the 20-25, 25-20, 25-21, 25-22 loss to host Mazama in the Southern Sky Conference opener.
Teammate Renee Murphy added six kills.
Southwest Conference
u SOUTH EUGENE 3, NORTH MEDFORD 1 — At Eugene, Hillevi Johnson had 10 kills and 21 digs in a 25-21, 13-25, 25-18, 25-22 loss to South Eugene in a Southwest Conference match.
Teammates Danielle Boyd and Emily Otoski added 10 kills and 17 assists, respectively.
u ROSEBURG 3, SOUTH MEDFORD 0 — At Roseburg, Breanne Thomas had 17 kills and Devan Belshe led host Roseburg to a 25-14, 25-6, 25-15 Southwest Conference victory.
Demi Belshe added a team-high three blocks and Vanessa Bentley had 24 assists for the Indians (11-1, 2-0 SWC).
Madi Sash recorded eight kills and Sam Owirka had eight assists for South Medford (1-3, 0-2).
u SHELDON 3, GRANTS PASS 0 — At Eugene, Gabby Parker had 14 kills to pace Sheldon to a 25-19, 25-14, 25-19 victory.
Allison Davies recorded 17 digs for the Irish, and Casey Rose added 21 assists.
