CORVALLIS — The NAIA's fifth-ranked Southern Oregon wrestling team went 1-1 against NCAA Division I opponents Friday at Crescent Valley High, including an impressive victory over Air Force.

CORVALLIS — The NAIA's fifth-ranked Southern Oregon wrestling team went 1-1 against NCAA Division I opponents Friday at Crescent Valley High, including an impressive victory over Air Force.

SOU (5-3) defeated Air Force 20-15 and also dropped a 40-3 decision to Oregon State. The Raiders will next take part in the Reno Tournament of Champions on Sunday.

In the victory over Air Force, Southern Oregon jumped out early and won four of the first six matches to take control of the dual.

Top-ranked Mitchell Lofstedt got the dual started with a pin of Andrew Swirlein in 1:30 at 125 pounds and Brian Jacob followed that up with a victory at 133.

Justin Mills had a major decision victory at 149 to give the Raiders a 13-4 lead. Tommie Hooper then scored a victory at 165 and Chris Platt's major decision victory at 184 wrapped up the dual for the Raiders.

Against the Beavers, Platt was the lone winner for the Raiders against his former team. The defending national champion came away with a 4-2 victory to break up OSU's shutout bid.

Women's Basketball

EASTERN OREGON 61, SOUTHERN OREGON 57 — At La Grande, Eastern Oregon jumped out to an early lead and held on late to upset ninth-ranked Southern Oregon.

Shaylee Neilsen led three Mountaineers (7-5, 2-1 CC) in double-digits with 15 points.

Jacki Speer had another monster night for the Raiders (12-2, 1-2), going for 18 points and 20 rebounds despite fouling out late in the game. Krystal Smith and Emily Brookins both had nine points for the Raiders and Brookins added 10 rebounds.

Southern Oregon shot just 35 percent from the field for the game, 25 percent from 3-point land and 46 percent from the free-throw line.

Eastern Oregon led by as much as eight in the first half and 28-24 at the half. In the second half, the advantage got up to 12 before the Raiders came back and cut the lead to three at 55-52 after buckets by Smith and Brookins with 1:19 to play, but that's as close as the Raiders would get the rest of the way.

Men's Basketball

EASTERN OREGON 91, SOUTHERN OREGON 76 — At La Grande, Eastern Oregon took advantage of a huge advantage on the boards to upend Southern Oregon.

Jordan Gregg had a team-high 23 points for the Mountaineers (8-4, 2-1 CC), who outrebounded the Raiders 48-28.

Jarrad Childs, in his second game back, had a team-high 22 points for SOU (8-4, 0-3). Drew Herrera finished with 11 points, while Justonn Smith and Ryan Staker both had 10 points. Humphrey Jackson recorded a career-high 10 assists to go along with six points.

The Raiders led 52-47 with just over 14 minutes to play but the Mountaineers rallied to take a 61-58 lead midway through the second half and stretched their advantage to double digits the rest of the way.
