Edward A. Owen

Edward Ashton Owen was born November 8, 1919, in Thermopolis, Wyo., and died Friday, Dec. 4, 2009, at his home in Medford, Ore. His parents were Edward Ashton Owen and Blanche Margaret Chase Owen. His family had a tradition of naming the eldest son Edward Ashton and he was the

sixteenth in succession.

Growing up during the Depression, he and his brother, George, worked many jobs while they were in high school to help support their family. He attended the University of

Wyoming for one year before he joined the Army Air Corp in 1941.

He married Elizabeth Jane Terrell (Betty) in Seattle,

Wash., in 1942. Because he made the Air Force his career, their six children were all born in different places. The family had many adventures together as they lived in Washington,

California, Alaska (before it was a state), Colorado, and

Naples, Italy. Ed also served in Thailand and Vietnam. He

retired in 1968 as a Chief Warrant Officer — and the family chose to live in Talent, Oregon.

He returned to school and graduated from Southern Oregon College in 1971. He worked for the city of Talent and the State of Oregon before "really retiring." His passion was golf and he played five days a week, no matter the weather, often using orange golf balls in the snow, until his health forced him to stop. He always maintained the hope that he would get strong enough to get back to it. He also liked to travel and visited Mexico, China, Hawaii, and took a number of cruises. One of his favorite places to visit was Montserrat, an island in the Caribbean, until a volcano eruption made it

uninhabitable.

Betty died in 1987. In 1990, Ed married Betty J. Haughton of Phoenix, Ore. They lived in Medford and Central Point.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; his

brother; his son and daughter-in-law, Terrell James and

Bonnie Jean Owen; his grandson, Aaron Esselstyn; and his

stepdaughter, Barbara Jean Dekrow. He is survived by his wife; his children, Elizabeth Jane Moyer, of Central Point, Ore., Edward Ashton Owen Jr., of Medford, Ore., Jo Margaret (Earl) Honomichl, of Anacortes, Wash., Thomas Michael (Theresa) Owen, of Eagle Point, Ore., Katherine Lucia (Todd) Esselstyn, of Redmond, Wash.; and stepdaughter, Linda Jane Cloughen, of California. He is also survived by grandchildren, Theresa (Mark) Smith, Angela (Kevin) Doren, Christopher Owen, Jennifer (Isaac) Lane, Luke Esselstyn, and Drew Esselstyn; and great-grandchildren, Kevin Smith,

Korrin Smith, Matthew Doren, Austin Doren, Noah Doren, Tamia Lane, Kiana Lane, Mariah Lane, and Julian Lane.

He would often tease that he had to live to be 92 to get back all that he had contributed to his retirement fund and he

almost made it. His sense of humor is only one of the many things that will be missed about this dear man!
