A Medford bear hunter whose pickup truck slid off a Forest Service road in the Applegate Lake area Monday evening was discovered safe and rescued by search crews about 9 a.m., according to the Jackson County Sheriff Mike Winters.

Pete Shilts, 57, was found in his pickup off Forest Service Road 1035 near the reservoir in southwestern Jackson County, Winters said.

Shilts headed out bear hunting at 5:30 a.m. Monday and was reported missing at 3:30 a.m. today, Winters said.

Search crews immediately scrambled to the snowy, high-elevation areas of the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest.

The pickup truck apparently slid off the snowy road, and he spent the night in it, Winters said.
