Workers poured concrete on the new Barnett Road bridge over Bear Creek Tuesday as they raced to get it open for traffic by Jan. 12.

The first half of the concrete was poured on Thursday. Altogether, 50 trucks delivered about 500 cubic yards of concrete for the 8-inch-thick bridge deck.

Gary Leaming, spokesman for the Oregon Department of Transportation, said the deadline for the contractor, Wildish Standard Paving of Eugene, is Jan. 12.

Leaming said the contractor had hoped to open the bridge sooner, but cold weather stalled the concrete pouring.

After the concrete has set for 14 days, traffic could begin using the bridge. But other work needs to be done, including sidewalks, a median, railings and striping.
