Medford police have arrested a man they suspect robbed a Shell gas station on Crater Lake Highway near the Rogue Valley Mall late Monday.

Benyam Samuel Broeckel, 21, who has no address listed, was arrested Tuesday on charges of first- and second-degree robbery, unlawful use of a weapon, menacing with a firearm and first-degree theft. He was lodged at the Jackson County Jail, where he remained Wednesday on more than $2 million bail.

An employee of the Shell station at 1968 Crater Lake Highway called 9-1-1 at about 11 p.m. Monday to report an armed robbery. A young black man had come into the station, shown a handgun and demanded cash from an employee, police said. He ran away with an undisclosed amount of money.

Police said officers arrived at the gas station less than a minute after receiving a 9-1-1 call about the robbery. Officers surrounded the area and searched with a police dog, but didn't find the robber. However, officers on alert after the robbery was reported stopped a suspicious car in the 600 block of North Riverside Avenue several hours later. The stop led to a nearby home, where investigators found Broeckel and evidence from the gas station robbery, police said in a release Wednesday. They also found property that reportedly had been taken from parked cars during break-ins in northwest Medford late last week and over the weekend, Medford police Lt. Bob Hansen said.

No charges have been added in those cases yet, he said.
