Southbound Interstate 5 traffic is stopped at the south Ashland exit 14 due to snow conditions in California, the Oregon Department of Transportation has announced.

"We are holding traffic at the request of Caltrans," said ODOT Assistant District Manager Shaun Stephens. "We don't have an estimate when we will release traffic into California."

The Caltrans Web site reports that Interstate 5 is closed to northbound traffic three miles north of Yreka, Calif., because of heavy snow. The freeway is closed there because of numerous spin outs between the junction with State Route 96, along the Klamath River, and two miles south of the Oregon border.

Road condition updates are available at www.Tripcheck.com or by calling 511. Road and weather information can be accessed toll-free within Oregon by dialing (800) 977-ODOT (6368).

California road conditions are online at the Caltrans Web site, http://www.dot.ca.gov/cgi-bin/roads.cgi or by calling 511 within California or (800) 427-7623 outside the state.
