A man stabbed in an early morning fight in Medford has died, police said.

Medford police reported that Joseph Mathew Ziegler, 23, died at a local hospital about an hour after he was taken by ambulance from a house where a fight broke out.

Daniel Tony Lawrence, 19, of the 3000 block of South Pacific Highway, has been lodged in the Jackson County Jail on a murder charge.

Both men were visiting the residents of a home in the 300 block of Bessie Street, where people had gathered for a party, Medford police Lt. Bob Hansen said. Only four people were left at the house when a fist fight broke out and Lawrence grabbed a serrated kitchen knife, stabbing Ziegler, Hansen said.

People had been drinking when the conflict broke out, police said. Investigators haven't determined the motive, yet.

Technicians from the Oregon State Police crime lab continue to evaluate evidence. The Jackson County Sheriff's, Oregon State Police, Ashland Police Department, and the district attorney's office all are working on the case.
