The mood should be decidedly jazzy tonight at Southern Oregon University’s Recital Hall: The university’s jazz ensemble takes the stage in its spring concert.

The event begins at 8 p.m. at SOU, 1250 Siskiyou Blvd., Ashland. Tickets are $5 general, free to students.

The 18-piece jazz ensemble will present Pat Metheny’s “The First Circle,” as well as compositions by Billy Mays, Matt Catingub, Don Menza and Johnny Richards.

SOU soloists will include Jeff Newman on saxophone, Jonathan Janakes and Sean McDermott on trumpet and Ryan GŁt on drums. The concert also will feature two student combos directed by Steve Davidson. The combos will present short sets of jazz standards, including Duke Ellington’s “It Don’t Mean a Thing if it Ain’t Got That Swing,” Thelonious Monk’s “Monk’s Dream” and Dave Brubeck’s “Blue Rondo a la Turk.”
