A "pioneer family" gathering open to everyone is planned Saturday, July 10, at Hanley Farm near Central Point.

The Southern Oregon Historical Society-sponsored event is from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the farm at 1053 Hanley Road. Admission is $7.50 for adults, $3 for children and $20 for a family.

Organizers say the gatherings will revive a 19th-century tradition in which a pioneer society held annual picnics that included reading of obituaries of members who had died that year, poetry readings, patriotic songs and children's recitations.

The July 10 picnic will be an opportunity for pioneer families to learn about their ancestors and make connections with other families that trace their roots to the 1800s.

It will include a casual picnic, genealogy activities for all ages and musical entertainment. Pioneer families are asked to bring a family story that will be read during the event by a costumed interpreter and family photos that will be scanned and kept on file in the historical society's archive.
