Southern Oregon players highlighted the list of all-state softball honors released Tuesday, and none more than at the Class 6A level where Grants Pass swept the top three awards and North Medford landed two players on the first team.

Coming off their second state championship in three years, the Cavers garnered the 6A awards for player of the year (Tara Glover), pitcher of the year (Morgan Barnes) and coach of the year (Tom Blanchard). Catcher Tia Misfeldt joined her senior teammates on the all-state first team, which also included North Medford's McKenna Storey and Logan Hagey.

The only other local first-team honor came at the 3A level, with junior outfielder Dakota Coldsmith getting the nod for Rogue River.

"They're just a quality program," Black Tornado head coach Mike Mayben said of the Cavers, who finished second to North in the Southwest Conference standings. "The kids they have are an extremely hard-working group."

Two of Barnes' three losses came in SWC play against the Black Tornado, and the Boise State-bound senior finished with 19 wins and a 0.34 ERA. She struck out 273 in 146 innings. Glover, who has signed with Utah, hit .594 with 30 RBIs to go with 11 doubles, 10 triples and two home runs.

"Those are two definite Division I players," added Mayben. "Morgan really is a kid that carries herself extremely well. She's very competitive but at the same time has a great respect for the game and the people in it. And Tara has the whole package. She can hit for power but also bunt and is real fast. She can cover the field as well as anyone I've seen."

"You've also got to give a lot of credit to Tom," said Mayben. "He won two state titles in three years and kept that group together and helped them become better players over the course of those three years. I've been impressed by what Tom's been able to accomplish and it's really forced everybody else to follow suit and mold their programs in the same way."

For Storey, the first-team honor was the second straight for the North Medford center fielder. She hit a team-best .537 in league and .510 overall, with an on-base percentage of .573 for the season that was only a fraction better than in league (.571). She scored 21 of her 35 runs and had 16 of her 26 RBIs in SWC play, and boasted a perfect fielding percentage in league.

"She was a great leader and got our outfield really focused," said Mayben. "You can't say enough about the range she had in the outfield just purely by knowledge of the game and anticipating where they were going to hit it. I don't think she has any idea how good of a player she really is, so first-team recognition two straight years says a lot. But at the same time, she's just a humble kid that's great to be around."

Hagey's spot on the designated hitter/utility list was a little more surprising, if only for the fact that the junior missed all of last season after suffering a knee injury during volleyball season. She returned to hit .435 in league with a .519 on-base percentage and .405 overall. Half of her 16 RBIs came in SWC play and she finished with 17 runs scored and seven doubles.

"She's always been a strong kid and yet she hits consistently, too," said Mayben. "I think her numbers kinda demonstrate that."

Hagey began the season in right field but primarily played third base toward the end of the season for the SWC champions.

Teammate Amanda Wolfe, who led the Tornado with 27 RBIs to go with a .344 batting average, was named to the second team as a junior catcher, while sophomore pitcher Kelsie Bartley and senior shortstop Jenna Stevens were third-team selections. Grants Pass' D Jantzer was also on the third team while fellow infielder Hannah Fischer was an honorable mention choice.

At the 5A level, Crater's Renee Murphy and Dennae Grant set the pace for the locals with second-team selections.

Murphy faced the formidable task of replacing Brittany Reeves, last year's 5A pitcher of the year, and fared well inside the circle by going 7-1 in conference and 13-5 overall with a 1.50 ERA. She had 106 strikeouts in 126 innings.

"She really grew this year as a pitcher," said Crater head coach Chris Arnold. "She wanted to be the person who got the ball and she carried the bulk of the load for us this year."

The sophomore also batted cleanup for the Comets, hitting .471 with a .733 slugging percentage to go with 25 RBIs and 22 runs scored. She led the team in extra-base hits with three homers, four triples and nine doubles.

"She came up at big times for us as well and definitely was a clutch hitter for us," added Arnold.

Grant, a junior center fielder, led the Comes with 29 runs to go with a .362 batting average and .417 on-base percentage from the leadoff spot. Her 34 hits were second on the team and she added 10 stolen bases.

"She finds ways to get on and she's very good at creating offense," said Arnold. "She's an aggressive baserunner and makes things happen on the bases."

The Comets also received a trio of third-team selections in junior Sarah Haga (catcher), senior Kayla Hopkinson (first base) and freshman Malorie Mitchell (shortstop). Teammates Taylor Mackey (second base) and Emily Medina (left field) were honorable mention choices, along with Eagle Point junior pitcher Chloe Hanson.

In 4A, Phoenix senior Chandler Tally was named to the all-state second team as an outfielder, with senior teammate Jordan Peery (utility) named to the third team and honorable mention nods going to senior Kirstin Stroud (pitcher), Kourtney Scoggins (catcher) and Mackenzie Welburn (infield).

North Valley junior Kendra Peckham was also an honorable mention catcher.

Joining Coldsmith on the 3A list was Rogue River senior McKenzie Cates, who was an honorable mention pitcher.
