GRANTS PASS — On a day of celebration with a dedication of the new track surface, tragedy struck again at Grants Pass Downs Saturday.

After two horses were euthanized because of an accident on the track opening day, another one was put down Saturday.

I'm Rough N Ready injured itself in the 61/2-furlong fifth race after coming out of the first turn on or near the lead. Jockey Luis Torres jumped off the horse when he sensed the injury and the 6-year-old thoroughbred collapsed soon afterward.

I'm Rough N Ready, which broke its back right leg, was put down on the track by state veterinarian Dr. Stacy Katler.

I'm Rough N Ready, the betting favorite, finished second in a 51/2-furlong claimer at GP Downs on June 19.

"After what happened opening day, we were keeping our fingers crossed that it would be a safe weekend for the horses and jockeys," said Tag Wotherspoon, GP Downs director of communications and marketing. "We're obviously very disappointed and saddened that a horse got seriously injured and had to be euthanized."

A 10-minute ribbon cutting ceremony celebrating a $200,000 project to replace the track's dirt racing surface last fall was held between fourth and fifth races. Southern Oregon horse racing patriarch Don Jackson was one of many recognized for their contributions to the project.

Jockey Terrance Birdrattler had a career day, winning five of the 10 races on Saturday's card.

The 23-year-old rider from Browning, Mont., won the opening two races, then the fifth, sixth and seventh.

Birdrattler rode here for the first time last season but suffered a broken wrist the second weekend and missed the remainder of the meet.

Betting favorite Nothing In Common went wire-to-wire to win the featured $3,550 Southern Belle Handicap.

Jockey Hugo Herrera guided the 5-year-old mare to the victory in the 51/2-furlong eighth race for fillies and mares.

Nothing In Common registered her fifth straight win and sixth in 10 starts this year.
