Ashland Fire Department has doused a house fire off Sherman Street that sent smoke across Siskiyou Boulevard near downtown.

Fire officials have declared the one-story home at 166 Sherman St. a loss after it caught fire at 4:30 this afternoon.

Investigators believe the blaze sparked in a closet and moved throughout the home, including the attic. It took nearly an hour for fire crews to gain control of the fire.

One person was home when the blaze started but managed to escape and was not injured, fire officials told an Ashland Daily Tidings reporter who is on scene.

The occupants rent the home. The property owner is not yet known.

The house sits just a few blocks from the Ashland Fire Department’s downtown fire station.

Sherman Street remains closed at its intersection with Allison Street.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, fire officials said.
