Dylan Wu of Medford, competing in his final event as a 13-year-old, shot a 66 Monday in the first round of the Southern Oregon Junior Golf Championships at Rogue Valley Country Club.

Wu, who turns 14 today, is in the Intermediate Division this week. He'll jump to the Boys Division for ages 14 and 15 in his next tournament.

Wu eagled the par-5 16th hole, made four birdies and didn't have a bogey in building a nine-shot lead. His birdies were on the first, sixth, 12th and 18th holes.

The Intermediates play from the blue tees, which measure 5,915 yards.

The tournament ends today.

16U A ASA REGIONAL TOURNAMENT — At Spokane, Wash., the Southern Oregon Comets vanquished the Spokane Storm twice on Sunday to win the regional championship at Franklin Park.

The victory in the 22-team, double-elimination tournament qualified the Comets for the 16U National Tournament, Aug 1-8 in College Station, Texas.

The Comets, who went 6-0, beat the Storm 13-1 in the title game after getting an 8-0 victory in five innings earlier in the day.

For the tournament, Sarah Haga hit four home runs and drove in 13 runs for the Comets.

Renee Murphy and Chloe Hanson each went 3-0 from the circle, with Hanson getting the win in the title game.

Murphy also hit two home runs and had seven RBIs, and Hanson homered and drove in eight runs.

The Comets' Dennae Grant and Rachel Ray each went 11-for-19. Grant scored nine runs and was walked five times. Ray crossed home 12 times and forced three walks.

Also for the Comets, Kenvie Rohde was 9-for-19 with a home run.

The Comets, who are comprised of nine Crater players and one each from South Medford and Eagle Point, outscored their opponents 61-15 in the event.
