GRANTS PASS — A 27-year-old Central Point man died Monday near Riverside Park after apparently running a red light on his motorcycle and striking a sport utility vehicle.

The dead man was identified as Matthew J. Cacka, who suffered a fractured spine and internal injuries, according to the Grants Pass Department of Public Safety.

The crash occurred at about 7:39 p.m. Monday at Rogue River Highway and East Park Street.

The driver of the SUV, Lisa M. Beale, 31, of Lancaster, Calif., was not injured.

Numerous witnesses reported that Cacka's motorcycle had struck the Toyota Highlander in the intersection, Sgt. Jim Hamilton said.

Several witnesses helped Cacka, while others helped with traffic control until emergency crews arrived less than two minutes later.

Cacka was taken to Three Rivers Community Hospital, where he died Monday night during surgery.

There is no evidence that alcohol or speed was a factor in the crash, according to Hamilton.

The case remains under investigation, and anyone with information about the accident is asked to call Grants Pass police at 541-474-6370.
