After earning a degree in meteorology in 1995 at North Carolina State University, Kevin Selfe says he felt something else calling him.

His college roommate had introduced him to the world of Howlin' Wolf, Muddy Waters and Elmore James, so he abandoned a potential career as a weatherman and began to pursue the blues.

Selfe and his Tornadoes will perform at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, July 23 and 24, at Roscoe's, 117 S. Main St., Phoenix.

Now based in Portland, Selfe's electric blues outfit includes himself on guitar and harmonica, Don Shultz on drums and John Neish on bass.

The trio quickly became known around the Portland area and won the Muddy Award for Best Contemporary Blues Act from the Cascade Blues Association in 2009. Selfe also made it to the top 10 at the 2010 International Blues Challenge in Memphis.

Selfe and The Tornadoes released "Playing The Game," a collection of 10 original tunes, in September of 2009. The CD was selected by a group of judges to represent the Cascade Blues Association for the Best Self-Produced CD competition presented by The Blues Foundation. Blues Revue stated, "Selfe plays with rare thoughtfulness and taste ... his clean tone and deep well of approaches keep things fresh," and James Walker of Blues Blast Magazine wrote that "Kevin Selfe is a guitar playing son-of-a-gun ... (the trio) consistently proves originality and versatile competence in its craft."
