Eugene D. Miles

Eugene (Gene), 89, passed away peacefully at his home, surrounded by his family, on July 13, 2010, at 12:29 a.m.

Gene was born November 28, 1920, in Grand Rapids, Mich., where he spent his childhood. He graduated in 1939 from South Valley High School, and shortly thereafter met Helen Pasko. They were married on June 28, 1941. That same year, Gene and Helen (his wife of 60 years) moved from Michigan to California to find a climate that was more suitable for her respiratory problems.

He loved his 40 years in the aircraft industry with North American Aviation, Rohr Aircraft, and Northrop Aircraft. Having failed the army physical exam, Gene began his aircraft career shortly before the Pearl Harbor attack, working in factory production-scheduling, and later in contract administration, and contract pricing.

Gene was an avid flyer, and flew mercy missions for the Flying Samaritans, as well as search and rescue for the Civil Air Patrol.

Gene and Helen used their airplane to scout real estate investments, which resulted in the development of a manufactured housing community in El Cajon, Calif., and another in Talent, Ore. Since 1990, they divided their residency between Talent and Carlsbad, Calif.

Gene was pre-deceased by Helen in April 2001; and son, Jeff, in March 2009.

He is survived by daughter, Christine Hudson (Doye); grandsons, Bradley (Melissa and their children, Zachariah, Sarah, Emmalee); Zy (Christina and their children, Grace, Brice and Reese); Jacob (Sarah); Matthew (Andrea, and baby son on the way to be named Henry Jay); Christopher (Laura), all of Medford.

A celebration of his life will be held at the Mountain View Estates Clubhouse, Talent, on July 25, 2010, at 1:00 p.m. Pastor Tim Cartwright will officiate. Reception to follow.
