One of the year's hottest days so far will coincide today with an Applegate Lake contest that features a mountain run, a triathlon and a duathlon.

Participants in the fourth annual Granite Man competition will start the events at 8 a.m. at Hart-Tish park at the lake. Events include a 10-mile mountain run, a triathlon (three-quarters mile swim, 13-mile mountain bike ride and five-mile run), and a duathlon (13-mile mountain bike ride and five-mile run), and both men and women compete.

This year's races exist as a result of the efforts of Chad Wikander, who won the triathlon in 2009. When last year's race director quit, Wikander took up the cause and refashioned the races to make another go of the event.
