An elderly California man died and a woman riding in his car was critically injured Wednesday afternoon in an accident near Diamond Lake.

David Emanuel Youngberg, 85, of Long Beach, Calif., drove his 2000 Saturn sedan off the edge of a straight stretch of Highway 138E at 2:25 p.m., police said in a news release this morning.

The car crashed head on into a tree and then spun around the tree, police said.

Youngberg's friend, Jeanine Lucille King, 71, of San Diego, suffered critical injuries and was transported by helicopter to St. Charles Medical Center in Bend, police said. King was listed in fair condition this morning at the hospital.

Both were using safety belts, and the car's airbags deployed.

An investigation is continuing.
