The Medford Mustangs kept the hits coming on Wednesday.

The Medford squad used 18 hits to overpower the Madison-Portland Eastside Barbers and win, 16-2, in the opening round of the American Legion AAA state tournament at Kiger Stadium in Klamath Falls. The game ended after seven innings due to the 10-run mercy rule.

"We have been off for a while, but the kids have done a great job at practice and they came out and swung the bat," Medford manager Sandee Kensinger said.

Matt Maurer finished 3-for-4 with three doubles, two runs and three RBIs. The Pepperdine-bound left-hander, who improved to 6-0 on the mound, struck out nine and allowed just two hits and two runs (one earned) in six innings of work. Nate Namanny closed the game out strong in the seventh, recording two strikeouts and inducing a groundout.

After Maurer fanned the fourth, fifth and sixth hitters in the top of the sixth, the Mustangs cultivated nine runs using 14 batters in the bottom of the inning to put the game out of reach.

"Matt pitched really well and had pretty good command," Kensinger said of Maurer's performance. "And we are really pleased about not going nine innings. (Maurer) only pitched six, and that saves pitching. You don't like to run up the score on anybody, but if you can save pitching, it is to your benefit."

The Mustangs will play the Salem Withnell Dodgers (31-8), who defeated the Eugene Challengers, at 4:30 p.m. today in the double-elimination tournament. Bradey Shipley (4-1) gets the start for Medford.

The tourney runs through Sunday.

Garrett Tygerson was 3-for-4 with two runs and three RBIs and Seth Brown went 3-for-5 with two runs and four RBIs for Medford (35-8) against Madison-Portland. Colin Sowers finished 2-for-4 with three runs and Dan Katayama was 2-for-5 with a run and RBI. Lucas Stone, who had two hits, extended his hitting streak to 13 games.

Cody James and Tygerson both homered for the Mustangs, who held the Eastside Barbers (29-12) scoreless for the first four innings.
