Lifelong Rogue Valley resident Robert Bob Easten Randles, 88, passed away at his home on Wednesday, October 13, 2010. Bob, the oldest son of Merritt and Nellie (Perry) Randles, was born in Ashland, Ore., on January 27, 1922. He attended Ashland schools, graduating in 1941. He also attended Southern Oregon College of Education, a predecessor of Southern Oregon University.
Bob was employed by, and later became a partner in the family-owned Randles' Market, in Ashland (1936-1942), Talent (1942-1945), and Phoenix (1945-1955). In connection with his work at the Ashland store, Bob obtained his first driver's license at age 14, but lost it for a year when a new state law required licensed drivers to be at least 16. Following the sale of the Phoenix store, he worked for Fluhrer's Bakery, and its successor, Williams' Bakery, from 1955 until his retirement in 1974.
Bob was married to Winifred Powell Randles for 35 years from 1958 until her death in 1993. In 1995, he married Arlenne Dickey.
Bob is survived by his wife, Arlenne, of Medford, Ore.; stepchildren, Patricia Albertson, of Lake Oswego, Ore., Camille (Bill) Kievith, of Eugene, Ore., Phillip Powell, of Ashland, Ore., Brent (Amy) Powell, of Port Angeles, Wash., and Marilyn (Howard) Lorenz, of Camas, Wash.; brother, Gerry (Zelma) Randles, of Eugene, Ore.; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and longtime friends. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Winifred; stepson, Robert Powell; and his brother and sister-in-law, Don and Bobbie Randles.
Bob's will to succeed in life, combined with personal character qualities of perseverance, hard work, humility, patience, and a genuine concern for others were an inspiration to many.
At his request, no service is planned. His family would like to extend special thanks to his caregiver, Angelina Luna, and to Leslie Mehaffey, Marcia North, Marty Hogan, and the other staff of Providence Hospice.
