Great Harvest Bread Co. has risen to the top again, being chosen the Best Bakery for the ninth year in a row.

"We are so honored and thrilled to be baking bread for Medford and the Rogue Valley," says Lisa Allen, who opened the local franchise of the Montana-based bakery chain with her husband, Dan, in 1999 at 310 Genessee St.

She says the couple was attracted to the opportunity to offer a wholesome, whole-grain product to customers and have the chance to spend time at home with their three children. Through the years they've weathered changes in the wheat market and found local sources for ingredients such as honey and dairy, kept pace with technology and thrived even when the economy was tight.

The bakery plans to move into a new larger building — with room to serve coffee and sandwiches — a block south on Genessee in the spring.
