An extensive remodeling, new gas station and seven-week, 10 percent off shopping pass at the north store may have contributed to Fred Meyer winning this year's Best Grocery Store for the first time.

With two locations in Medford and one in Grants Pass, Fred Meyer traces its roots to 1922 when entrepreneur and founder Fred G. Meyer brought one-stop shopping — food, clothes, home products and prescriptions under one roof — to a Portland neighborhood.

Since 1999, Fred Meyer has been owned and operated by Kroger, the largest traditional grocer in the U.S., with 2,468 supermarkets and multi-department stores in 31 states under two dozen names.
