Jackson County's not alone in struggling with a rising unemployment rate: Six counties in rural Oregon are suffering from jobless rates over 15 percent.

In central Oregon, the unemployment rate in Crook County last month was 19 percent, the highest in the state and approaching Depression-area levels. Unemployment during the Depression peaked at 21.3 percent nationally in 1934.

In Southern Oregon, Jackson County's unemployment rate jumped to 13.5 percent for September, exceeding the Medford area's seasonally adjusted levels throughout the current recession.

In addition to Crook County, five others in Oregon recorded unemployment above 15 percent for September: Deschutes, Douglas, Grant, Harney and Jefferson.
