Snow is falling in mountain passes, but studded tires are allowed in Oregon only as of Nov. 1 as usual, the Oregon Department of Transportation has announced.

Hit with a blast of winter-like weather, Washington state this week gave drivers the go-ahead to use studded tires now. Oregon, however, is having none of that.

Officials said in a news release today that drivers should carry chains, use other types of traction tires or just not travel. Studded tires increase wear and damage on roads.

Drivers using studded tires outside the Nov. 1-March 31 season can be fined $190.
